Although true orthodontic emergencies are rare, we are available 24/7 to assist you if necessary. You can call or text our main line and follow the prompts to select the emergency line. One of our team members will be on-call to talk you through steps to alleviate your issue. Please only call this line if you are having a true emergency.
Wire Poking
If you have a wire that is poking your gum, cheek or tongue, it is recommended you put wax on the wire piece that is poking you, bend the wire to alleviate your pain, or clip it with sanitized clippers if you are able to. We are usually able to schedule you to come into the office the following business day to get your wire repaired.
General Soreness
It’s totally normal and expected for you to experience some soreness after getting your braces or clear aligners on, and after one of your regular orthodontic adjustments. Try to eat softer foods when your teeth are sore or tender to ensure your discomfort doesn’t get worse. Everyone loves mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese and ice cream – just enjoy eating it on doctors orders for a few days! If your gums are irritated, be sure to keep them very clean with regular brushing and flossing. You can also rinse your mouth with warm salt water to naturally cleanse your gums. It is normal for your cheeks, gums or tongue to temporarily feel irritated as they are getting used to the new metal braces hanging around!
Loose Appliance or Bracket
If your appliance is broken or causing you discomfort, place wax on the sharp part and call our office to schedule an appointment. Keep any brackets that fall off and bring to your appointment.
Loose Wire
Until you can visit our office for an emergency appointment, you can try to put your wire back into place by using a pair of tweezers. You can also use a piece of floss to put the wire into place by tying the floss around the bracket in place of the missing band.
