Surgical orthodontics, also known as orthognathic surgery, corrects jaw alignment to improve the patient´s ability to chew, speak, breathe and/or for an improved facial appearance. Often bite misalignment has little or nothing to do with the position of the teeth, but rather has to do with the position and growth of the bones that the teeth are connected to. These types of cases are typically corrected with a multi-disciplinary approach involving both the Orthodontist and an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon or Plastic Surgeon.

Adults with underbites, crossbites, open bites and other jaw alignment issues are usually candidates for this type of treatment, as well as children with growth anomalies that can’t be corrected with a conventional orthodontic approach. Treatment involves a multi-stage process involving both braces and jaw surgery. Braces typically are placed on the teeth a year to a year and a half before the planned surgical procedure and are kept in place for six months to a year after surgery to ensure and stable and esthetic outcome.
